Hall of Athletic Honor

The inaugural class of the Hall of Athletic Honor in 1978.
The Hall of Athletic Honor recognizes exceptional athletic achievement by Gettysburg athletes over the past 100-plus years. Its members range from Albert Russell Aukerman, Class of 1897, a football running back and track star, to Jason (Jake) Dell, Class of 1998, a three-time All-American wrestler who was inducted in 2008. Since its founding in 1978, 204 student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and other personnel have been selected to the Hall of Athletic Honor.
O&B Club Announces 2010 Hall of Athletic Honor Class
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Awards, records, and victories by the score fill the resumes of the latest crop of former Gettysburg College student-athletes to earn selection to the The Rudisill Hall of Athletic Honor. Five Bullets spanning nearly 40 years of varsity competition and eight varsity sports will be formally inducted October 1 as part of Homecoming Weekend.
Craig Van Tatenhove ’65 (men’s swimming), Tony Wechter ’88 (football, baseball), Kristen Hull ’95 (women’s soccer, women’s tennis, women’s track & field), Catherine Schott ’00 (volleyball), and Paul Smith ’00 (football, men’s track & field) will join the long list of Gettysburg athletic greats in the Hall of Athletic Honor on Friday, Oct. 1, following a reception and dinner starting in the College Union Ballroom at 5:45 p.m.
A list of 20 finalists was narrowed down from a selection of over 60 former student-athletes and athletics staff members covering nearly all of the College’s intercollegiate varsity sports. From those 20 finalists, the Hall of Athletic Honor Committee voted on the strongest candidates to determine the Class of 2010.
“This year’s class is simply amazing – all five inductees are among the most successful and decorated athletes in school history,” noted O&B Director Ben Rupp. “With that said, we have such a great athletic tradition at Gettysburg and so many worthy candidates, that the debate and selection was extremely close. It truly was a pleasure participating in the selection process for the first time this spring, and I’m really looking forward to celebrating with the newest inductees over Homecoming.”
Craig Van Tatenhove was one of Gettysburg’s top swimmers in the mid-60s, winning almost two dozen individual events in dual-meet competition at a time when the Bullets competed as a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference University Division. He set school records in the 100, 200, and 500 editions of the freestyle and was one of the first Bullets to compete in the NCAA Championships.
Tony Wechter was the quintessential five-tool athlete during his stints with the football and baseball teams, leading both programs to unparalleled heights. On the gridiron, he was an All-Centennial Conference First Team selection as a kick returner and defensive back and helped lead the Bullets to a pair of conference titles. In 1985, he finished ninth in Division III in punt returns as Gettysburg went 11-1-1 and advanced to the national semifinals. On the diamond, Wechter played a bevy of positions including catcher, shortstop, outfielder, and pitcher. He led the Bullets to a pair of conference crowns and the team’s only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1988. He was integral in Gettysburg’s national run, hitting .373 with a school-record 49 runs in addition to posting a 5-2 record with a 2.18 ERA on the mound.
Kristen Hull is the second consecutive member of her family to join the Hall of Athletic Honor, following in the footsteps of husband Bill Gray ’96, who was inducted just last fall. Hull competed for three different teams during her tenure in orange and blue, with women’s soccer taking center stage. She was a four-time all-conference selection and was tabbed CC Player of the Year in 1994. Gettysburg captured the first two Centennial titles in 1993 and 1994 and made its first two appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament in those years. After four years, Hull finished as the school’s all-time leader in points (118), goals (43), and assists (32). She was no slouch in the other two sports she played at Gettysburg, posting a 22-11 combined record in tennis and setting several records on the track.
It’s not often a candidate makes enough of a statement to warrant Hall induction in their first year of eligibility, but both Catherine Schott and Paul Smith did just that during their tenures just over a decade ago.
Schott was arguably the greatest volleyball player in school and conference history, earning more awards and setting more records than any Bullet before or after her. Four times she was tabbed both All-CC First Team and All-Mid-Atlantic Region, and she remains the only three-time CC Player of the Year. In 1997, she was named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Second Team – the highest national award earned by any player in Centennial Conference history. Schott’s records still stand head and shoulders above the second-best marks in conference and school history, including a mind-blowing 2,209 career kills during the pre-rally scoring era. She led Gettysburg to four CC titles and four national playoff appearances.
People still recount Paul Smith’s exploits on the gridiron with shock and awe. Like his classmate Schott, Smith established marks no Bullet before or after has been able to match. He was a three-time All-American, a four-time All-CC First Team selection, and the 1999 CC Co-Player of the Year as a fullback and kick returner. He was just the second player in NCAA history (all divisions) to eclipse 9,000 all-purpose yards (9,104). Smith turned in one of the greatest individual efforts in NCAA history by racking up a still-standing national record 527 all-purpose yards against Muhlenberg College on Oct. 23, 1999. In the offseason from football, Smith picked up two letters as a sprinter and thrower with the Bullets track and field team.
The Hall of Athletic Honor induction kicks off a full weekend of Homecoming events at Gettysburg. The five new inductees will be introduced at halftime of Saturday’s football game against Ursinus College which starts at 1 p.m. Most of Gettysburg’s fall teams will be in action that weekend with field hockey playing on Friday at 3:30 and volleyball, women’s soccer, and women’s soccer at home on Saturday.
Away from the athletic fields, Gettysburg will be holding a pep rally Friday night, the Class of 2005 Fifth Reunion, the Cupola Society Celebration, and a Choir Reunion in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the choral program.
