ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – Senior Tom Kefalas (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) closed out his collegiate career in style, earning runner-up honors at the 2008 Centennial Conference Men’s Golf Championship Sunday afternoon at the Bridges Golf Club.
Kefalas carded a four-over-par 76 in the third and final round on Sunday, finishing with a 54-hole score of 229 (79-74-76), just three strokes behind champion Steve Meier of McDaniel College. As a team, Gettysburg posted a 946 (314-320-312) to place third among six teams.
Both Kefalas and freshman Peter Kratsios (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) (right) were named to the all-conference team by virtue of their top-five finish. Kratsios fired a spring-best 75 on Sunday and tied for third in the 35-man field with a 231 (79-77-75). Kefalas earned his second all-conference honor, as he also finished third at the 2006 championship.
McDaniel erased a four-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s final round by shooting a 304, and the Green Terror finished with a 917 to claim its conference-leading sixth Centennial Conference title, its third in the last four years. McDaniel outdistanced second-place Muhlenberg, which led after each of the first two rounds, by a whopping 17 strokes.
Rounding out the team scoring were Gettysburg, Franklin & Marshall (947), Dickinson (949), and Ursinus (986).
Also named to the all-conference team were Chuck Anttonen of Franklin & Marshall, who tied Kratsios for third, and McDaniel’s Gerald Butler, who was fifth with a 232.
Freshman Peter Ruymann (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) shot his best round of the tournament on Sunday, logging an 80 to finish 28th with a 252 (85-87-80). Sophomore Bradley Allen (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) completed Gettysburg’s third-round team scoring, posting a season-low 81 to tie for 26th. Senior Jim LeClair (Plainfield, N.H./Kimball Union Academy) closed the curtains on his collegiate career with a final-round 86, and he tied for 23rd with a 245 (73-86-86).
The championship marked the final match of the season for the Bullets.
