GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College will serve as the host site for the 2010 NCAA Division II and Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championships, the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships Committee has announced.
The 2010 semifinal and final rounds will be held on May 22-23, 2010 at Gettysburg’s Clark Field.
Additional details on the championships will be posted at GettysburgSports.com as they become available.
Gettysburg’s selection marks the first time the school has ever been picked as a predetermined site for a NCAA Championship event.
“The awarding of the 2010 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship bid is a testament to the great facilities and the extraordinary staff at Gettysburg College,” said Gettysburg athletic director
David Wright. “The lacrosse tradition at the college is exceptional and the ability to host important events has become a trademark of the institution. We are excited to welcome the women’s lacrosse community to Gettysburg College for this premier championship.”
“We are very pleased to have Gettysburg as the host for the 2010 NCAA Division II and Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championships,” said Shannon McHale, chair of the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championships Committee. “We are excited for the joint championships (DII and DIII) beginning this year in Salem and continuing next year at Gettysburg. We are confident Gettysburg will run an excellent championship as they have proven to be a wonderfully efficient host in past regional rounds. We feel Gettysburg has excellent facilities and staff that will make the 2010 NCAA Division II and Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championships a memorable event for all.”
Gettysburg’s women’s lacrosse team has been a fixture in the NCAA Division III Championships in recent years. Under head coach
Carol Cantele ’83, the Bullets have reached the NCAA playoffs in eight of the last nine years, including each of the past seven seasons. Gettysburg made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA semifinals in 2006 and 2007, and the 2006 squad reached the national championship game.
“Hosting the 2010 women’s lacrosse championship is a wonderful opportunity for Gettysburg College and the women’s lacrosse program,” said Cantele, who also serves as an assistant athletic director at Gettysburg. “We are looking forward to showcasing our excellent facilities, our committed and professional athletic staff and our beautiful campus. The historic and quaint town with restaurants and lodging aplenty makes it a perfect venue for this event. We couldn’t be more excited!”
The 2009 NCAA Division II and Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championships will be held in Salem, Va. on May 16-17.
