GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College athletic department unveiled its newest athletic facility on Wednesday when it held an opening ceremony for Phase Two of the Center for Athletics, Recreation and Fitness.

The ceremony included remarks from athletic director David Wright, president Janet Morgan Riggs '77, and Sarah Woodbury '10, co-president of Gettysburg's Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

Construction of the 55,000 square-foot facility, located west of the Bream Wright Hauser Athletic Complex, began in June 2008. Phase Two includes a fitness center, a student lounge known as “The Dive,” a multi-purpose room where classes will be held, a bouldering wall, and a large lobby area.

The remainder of the Center will open during Phase Three, which includes a new natatorium and a climbing wall inside the glass tower next to the entrance. The natatorium will feature a pool with eight competition lanes, a four-lane warm-up pool, as well as a spectator gallery. Preliminary plans call for the Phase Three opening to take place in late fall/early winter of 2009-10.
Phase One of the Center construction took place this past summer and included a renovation of Bream Wright Hauser. Bream Gymnasium received a major overhaul, getting new bleachers, a new sound system, new lighting, a new hardwood floor, and new windows. In addition, a new athletic training room was built that is over twice the size of the previous facility. The new training room features state-of-the-art hydrotherapy equipment in addition to increased space for rehabilitation and taping.
