SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Gettysburg College men’s and women’s tennis teams finished up the fall portion of their 2009-10 schedules with non-conference matches at NCAA Division II Shepherd University on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The men’s team claimed a 9-0 decision, while the women fell 5-2.

The men’s squad picked up its first victory of the season beginning with a trio of wins in doubles action. Senior Dale Beshore (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and freshman Chris Curran (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) improved to 3-1 as a tandem with an 8-6 victory at the top flight. Sophomore Terry Keegan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and senior Kevin Raynes (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) won their contest at No. 2 8-2, while sophomore Mike McLaughlin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and freshman Juri Jacoby (San Francisco, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep) won handily 8-1 at the third flight.

All six singles matches were decided in straight-sets. Curran polished off his first victory as Gettysburg’s top player 6-0, 6-2 and his doubles partner Beshore also won with a pair of 6-2 scores at No. 2. Keegan (6-0, 6-2), McLaughlin (6-3, 6-2), and Raynes (6-1, 6-0) had little trouble at third, fourth, and sixth singles, respectively, while freshman Johnny Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) posted a pair of bagels (6-0) for his first collegiate singles victory at No. 5.

On the women’s side, Gettysburg trailed 2-1 after doubles action despite an 8-5 victory at the third flight by sophomore Liz Heisler (Gwynedd, Pa./Wissahickon) and freshman Laura Habecker (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School). The Bullets’ remaining point came from senior Kelly Eurich (Elizbethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown), who bounced back from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to win 7-5, 7-6 (7-2). Two singles matches went unfinished due to darkness.
