GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Visiting Catholic University put three starters in double figures, highlighted by Cody Otto's 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, to overcome Gettysburg, 69-48, in the consolation game of the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon in Bream Gymnasium.
Wittenberg University (3-0) used a balanced scoring attack to overcome a 12 point second half deficit to defeat Messiah College (2-1), 66-61, in the championship game.
Tiger guard David Nowicki was named Tournament MVP after finishing with six points, four rebounds and a game-high nine assists in the championship game. Gettysburg's
Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), Catholic's Matt Fazzini, Messiah's Jamie Yoder and Kyle Snyder and Wittenberg's Clayton Black were named to the All-Tournament team.
Propelled by Otto and Fazzini's 3-for-4 marks from downtown, Catholic (2-2) shot a blistering 9-of-14 (64.3%) from three-point range in the victory. Forward Jason Banzhaf contributed 17 points with fellow forward Chris Kearney dropping in 11 for the Cardinals.
Leading the way for Gettyburg (0-2) was Powers who finished with game-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds and also added a team-high four assists.
Catholic led 11-10 in the early going, but proceeded to go on a 11-2 run to stretch its lead to double figures. After Gettysburg pushed the lead back to single digits on a three-pointer by junior guard
Paul Crone (Braddock Heights, Md. / Middletown), Catholic again applied the pressure and rode its hot shooting (12-of-22) to a 37-20 halftime edge. Otto scored 13 and Banzhaf added 10 for Catholic in the first frame.
The Bullets came out strong in the second stanza, going on an early 9-2 run, sparked by a three from senior co-captain
Andrew Bohan (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg). The Cardinals were able to weather the storm as Banzhaf provided a conventional three-point play to push their advantage to 13 points, and Gettysburg would not get any closer again.
The Bullets won the rebounding battle 27-24 and held Catholic to just six second-chance points. Gettysburg also shot 16-of-20 from the foul line and forced the Cardinals into committing 20 turnovers.
Gettysburg will return to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 24 for its first road contest of the season when it takes on York (Pa.) College at 8 p.m.
