Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Defense has been the name of the game for the Gettysburg College women's basketball team this season and that trend continued on Tuesday night in its Centennial Conference opener as the Bullets forced more turnovers than points allowed in a lop-sided 56-34 victory over Johns Hopkins University in Bream Gym.

Gettysburg (4-0, 1-0 CC) goaded Johns Hopkins (3-2, 1-1 CC) into 35 turnovers on the night, while limiting the Blue Jays to just 26 percent shooting from the floor. Johns Hopkins' point total was its lowest against Gettysburg since the Orange and Blue won a 77-20 decision in the teams' first-ever meeting in 1980. Senior Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) led the scoring effort with 13 points and junior Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) tallied 10 points, six rebounds, and five steals.

The early going had the makings of a close affair as the two teams traded buckets for a 6-6 tie at 16:51. That would be the last time the Bullets were threatened as an 11-0 run over a stretch of 7:19 led to a double-digit lead just past the nine-minute mark. Moser tossed in six tallies, while junior Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) capped the run with a three-pointer to give Gettysburg a 17-6 advantage with 8:59 remaining.

The margin would stay between 8-11 for several minutes before a 14-4 run by the hosts to end the half set the score at 36-17.

Johns Hopkins, which committed 20 turnovers in the first half alone, could not get its offense going in the second half and fell behind by 23 points (42-19) as the Bullets tallied six of the first eight points of the stanza. The host's lead would grow to as many as 28 down the stretch.

The Blue Jays won the battle of the boards 40-38, but finished just 13-of-50 from the floor and just 2-of-15 from beyond the arc. Gettysburg scored 31 points off turnovers and capitalized on second-chance opportunities with 19 tallies.

Drechsler reached double-figures for the second consecutive game thanks to a trio of trifectas. She also swiped four steals, one off of team honors held by Moser and sophomore Lauren Dadigan (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Dadigan was perfect from the field for the second time this season, nailing all four of her attempts for eight points.

Spicer finished with seven points, four rebounds, and tied a career mark with seven assists. Sophomore Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) led the Bullet bench with eight points and five rebounds.

Lyndsay Burton was the lone Blue Jay to reach double-digits with 10 points, adding four boards and a game-high six steals. Leslie Markun notched seven points and Monica Mitchell grabbed six rebounds.

Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 3, against Haverford College (2-2, 1-1 CC). Game time is slated for 7 p.m. inside Bream Gym.
