NEW TRIPOLI, Pa. – History did not repeat itself Sunday during the final round of the 2009 Centennial Conference Championships at Olde Homestead Golf Course as the Gettysburg College women's golf team was unable to make up the ground necessary to claim its second-straight conference crown, finishing runner-up behind McDaniel College by nine strokes. However, the Bullets did walk away with individual medalist honors for the second year in a row with freshman
Caroline Nathan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) claiming the top spot.
After blowing an eight-stroke lead at last season's championship, McDaniel made sure it captured its league-best sixth overall team championship with back-to-back low rounds on the weekend. The Green Terror jumped out to a six-stroke lead after day one with a 356 and fell only nine strokes off the pace on the final day with a 365, totaling 721 over the weekend. Gettysburg came up short in its title defense with a 368 in the final round to finish with a 730 (362-368) with Franklin & Marshall College (407-393=800), Dickinson College (438-404=842), and Muhlenberg College (450-456=906) rounding out the field.
Nathan joined 2008 winner
Merrill Fortier as the only Bullets to claim medalist honors at the conference tournament. After jumping out to a four-stroke lead after day one with an 84, she posted a 90 on the final day to maintain her advantage over the field. She is the third freshman to claim medalist honors at the event, joining 2001 winner Melissa Crognale of Muhlenberg and 2002 winner Kelly Cramp of McDaniel.
After finishing runner-up last season, Gettysburg sophomore
Leah Tuscano (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) earned all-conference honors once again with a third-place finish. She shot the second-best round on Sunday with an 85 to move up six spots in the individual standings, finishing with a total of 179 (94-85).
All five Bullets starters finished in the top half of the 29-player field. Freshman
Shelby Glass (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) carded a 96 on day two to finish 11th overall (92-96=188) with sophomores
Marybeth Scott (Chester Springs, Pa./The Hill School) and
Alex Moran (Boxford, Mass./The Governor's Academy) placing close behind in 13th (100-97=197) and 14th (92-108=200), respectively.
Gettysburg closed the season with a four tournament victories, tying the school record the team set just last year. The Bullets also notched a school-record team scoring average of 367.6 over seven events.
