Gone but Not Forgotten: Remembering Harry O'Neill

Harry O'Neill was a three-sport star for Gettysburg in the 1930s.

Memorial Day allowed a brief respite from the challenges of everyday life to recall and remember the heroes that have stood up for our nation during its times of greatest need. One of those heroes was Harry O'Neill, a 1939 graduate of the College who gave his life in the invasion of Iwo Jima during World War II in 1945. O'Neill, a former three-sport star for the Bullets and Major League Baseball player with the Philadelphia Athletics, was chronicled by Philadelphia Inquirer sports columnist Frank Fitzpatrick last week. The story can be read in its entirety here.

O'Neill was a star for the Bullets on the gridiron, hardwood, and diamond during his collegiate tenure. His accomplishments on those venues made him part of the third class to be inducted into the College's Hall of Athletic Honor in 1980. Read his Hall of Athletic Honor biography.
