Top Moment #10: Gridders Romp Over F&M in Season Finale

Nick McConnell racked up a career-high 181 yards in the Bullets 54-21 over F&M.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Put this one into the “Going Out with a Bang” category.

In its annual regular season finale against long-time rival Franklin & Marshall College, the 2008 football team officially buried a tough start, clobbering the Diplomats 54-21 at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on Senior Day.

After losing its first four games, the Orange & Blue caught fire and went 5-1 the rest of the way, giving the team its third-straight season of finishing .500 or better.

The Bullets secured their win with a nearly flawless first half. Taking on the conference's top-ranked defense heading into the game, Gettysburg put on an offensive clinic, rushing for 299 of its 434 yards before halftime to build a 33-7 advantage heading into the locker room.

Highlighting the explosive first half was an 85-yard touchdown run through a torrential downpour from sophomore tailback Jamel Mutunga. He finished the afternoon with a career-high 144 yards while senior tailback Nick McConnell made the most of his final collegiate outing, running for a career-high 181 yards.

The Bullets ended up scoring some 40 more points than F&M's defense allowed per game heading into the contest. Gettysburg also posted its highest rushing output since 1999, hit 50 points for the first time since 2003, and ran up its second-highest scoring total ever against F&M.
