BALTIMORE – Gettysburg College head women's lacrosse coach
Carol Cantele was tabbed the head coach of the 2009-2013 U.S. women's lacrosse developmental team according to a release by US Lacrosse on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Cantele was recommended for the position by the U.S. national team selection committee and her appointment was approved by the US Lacrosse Women's Division Board of Governors.
The developmental team is one of three squads comprising the women's national program and serves as a launching pad for adult lacrosse players looking for international exposure and continued refinement of their skills, with the ultimate goal of becoming a member of the Elite or World Cup team.
“I am honored and thrilled to be named as the women's developmental coach and I look forward to joining a great organization with a terrific staff already in place,” said Cantele in the US Lacrosse release. “I am grateful to the selection committee for placing their faith in me and I am very eager to offer my enthusiasm and passion to these talented world-class athletes. I look forward to aiding in keeping the momentum going after an incredible run for Team USA these past four years.”
Cantele has been serving as a mentor for lacrosse players for over two decades, the majority of that time having been spent at Gettysburg. Since her first season in 1993, the Bullets lacrosse program has established itself as one of the best in NCAA Division III, winning six Centennial Conference championships and playing in the national tournament nine times. Cantele's squad has reached the national semifinals in three of the last four seasons and has posted 13-straight winning seasons. Cantele is 230-80 in 17 seasons at Gettysburg and 254-103 over 21 seasons as a head coach, ranking her fifth among active Division III coaches in wins.
Cantele has received numerous awards during her tenure as a head coach, including being named national coach of the year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), womenslacrosse.com, and Inside Lacrosse in 2006. Recently, she was honored by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administration (NACWAA) with the Judith M. Sweet Commitment Award, given to those individuals who have provided outstanding leadership and commitment to colleagues and student-athletes in intercollegiate athletics.
Cantele is no stranger to the national team as her husband, current Gettysburg head athletic trainer
Mike Cantele, served as the athletic trainer for the Elite team during the program's run to the World Cup championship in 2009.
