GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men’s and women’s swimming teams kicked off a new era on Saturday, competing against Washington & Lee University in the first meet inside their cavernous new natatorium located in the College’s new Center for Athletics, Recreation, and Fitness.

Swimming in front of a large crowd, the two teams came away with a split in the non-conference meet. The women’s team, which won eight of 14 events, kept its perfect record intact, defeating the Generals 142-122 to move to 6-0. The men’s squad was dealt a 178-79 setback and suffered their first loss of the season, slipping to 4-1.

Freshman Brooke Lacey (Darien, Conn./Darien) won two events to lead the women’s team, which avenged a loss to Washington & Lee last season. Lacey won both the 100-and 200-breast in 1:10.40 and 2:30.89.

Also winning for the Bullets were freshman Katie Timmerman (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) in the 1,000-free (11:00.04), junior Maggie Mulderrig (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep School) in the 50-free (25.73), senior Patrice Boucher (Bryn Mawr, Pa./The Shipley School) in the 200-back (2:15.97), sophomore Mariesa Slaughter (Harrisonville, Mo./Harrisonville) in the 100-fly (1:02.46), and freshman Caroline Coolidge (South Windsor, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) in the 200-IM (2:18.84).

Boucher led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200-back, with freshmen Cassie Close (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and Siobhan Collins (Darnestown, Md./Bullis School) taking second and third in 2:16.12 and 2:17.24. In dual meets this season, Mulderrig is now 5-0 in the 50-free while Boucher and Coolidge are 3-0 in the 200-back and 200-IM, respectively.

In men’s action, sophomore Matt Libby (Freeport, Maine/Cheverus) posted the team’s lone wins, claiming both the 100-free (48.50) and the 200-free (1:44.78). He was also second in the 100-fly, ending his dual-meet winning streak in all events to start the season at 12.

Washington & Lee swept both the 200-medley and 200-free relays on both sides.

Gettysburg moved into its new 30,000-square-foot natatorium after competing in the College Union Building for the last 50 years. It features an eight-lane, 25-yard competition pool with a movable bulkhead along with a five-lane warm-up area. In addition, the natatorium includes new locker rooms and new offices for Gettysburg’s swimming coaches, along with a scoreboard featuring an eight-lane readout as well as increased deck space for land training.

The Bullets return to action next Saturday, when they host the University of Mary Washington in another non-conference meet.
