GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College was forced to forfeit a combined six matches and facing the likes of Stevens Institute of Technology and the United States Merchant Marine Academy didn't help the rest of the lineup as the Bullets dropped the final two matches of the regular season on Saturday inside Bream Gym.
Illnesses and injuries kept Gettysburg (3-13, 2-5 CC) from putting out a full lineup and Stevens (6-9, 4-3 CC) and Merchant Marine (13-7, 7-0 CC) took advantage by winning all but one bout at the Bullets' expense. The Ducks won handily 42-3, while the Mariners capped a perfect regular season by shutting out the hosts 46-0. Stevens and USMMA also topped Johns Hopkins University (4-9, 2-4 CC) by scores of 37-7 and 43-6, respectively.
Stevens won each of the first seven matches against Gettysburg by forfeit, pin, or major decision. Junior
Luke Mitchell narrowly missed putting the Bullets on the board before giving up a takedown to start the first sudden victory period and losing 3-1 at 184. Freshman
Marshall Puls also battled to the end against Ernie Guaimano at 197 and dropped a close 6-5 decision.
Junior
Bobby Christopher accounted for Gettysburg's lone official win at 285. He scored two quick takedowns against Brian Schmalz and added another later in the third period en route to a 7-3 win.
After nearly sweeping Johns Hopkins in its first match, Merchant Marine showed why it's the team to beat at next weekend's conference tournament by shutting out Gettysburg. The Mariners earned the maximum six points in the first five bouts with two forfeits and three pins.
Junior
DJ Neri (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) made eighth-ranked Justin Diesel work for a victory at 174, but a third-period takedown helped seal a 6-3 victory for the Mariner.
The most anticipated bout of the day was the finale between Christopher and Judd Connell at heavyweight. Connell was last season's runner-up at the conference meet thanks to an 8-2 decision over Christopher in the championship semifinals. Saturday's rematch was scoreless until Connell pulled off an escape to start the second period. Later, he managed to tangle Christopher's legs and earned credit for a takedown as the two wrestlers fell out-of-bounds. The Bullet junior rebounded at the start of the final stanza, pulling off a reversal from the down position. Connell escaped from Christopher's clutches and was able to evade a takedown for the remaining minute of the match to earn a 4-2 decision.
All the Centennial Conference squads will descend upon Stevens in Hoboken, N.J., next Saturday, Feb. 20, for the conference championships. Opening bouts are slated for a 10 a.m. start.
