NEW YORK – Senior Adrian Macdonald (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) set the indoor school record in the mile and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships, leading a handful of Bullets at the Columbia Last Chance Meet, held at the Armory, on Friday.

After narrowly missing the school record of 4:16 earlier this season, Macdonald shattered the mark set by Bill Geating in 1977 with a time of 4:12.78. Running on a banked track, he finished fifth out nine competitors in his heat and in front of four Division I runners, as he erased the oldest indoor track record at Gettysburg.

Macdonald will find out if he makes the cut for the NCAA Championships, to be held March 12-13 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., when the field is announced Sunday.

Junior Clay Reynolds (Medway, Mass./Worcester Academy) and sophomore Greg Minnick (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) also competed for the men’s team. Reynolds finished second out of five runners in his heat in the 800-meter run in 1:56.53 while Minnick placed second among three competitors in the high jump with a mark of 6-4 3/4 to equal his indoor PR. He also had three strong attempts at clearing 6-8.

For the women’s team, the Bullets received an outstanding performance in the 5,000-meter run by senior Kerrin Epstein (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) and freshman Christine Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy). The pair ran in a field of just three runners, with Dickinson’s Catherine Campbell placing first in 17:35.90, Epstein taking second in 17:59.22, and Esposito finishing third in 18:28.00. Both Epstein and Esposito’s times were PRs, and Epstein missed the school record set by Jaime Bagatti in 2004 by only six seconds. Epstein also became just the second female in school history to break 18 minutes in the indoor 5,000.

Senior Sarah Fritz (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) also ran and placed 12th in the 3,000-meter run (10:58.81). She also ran the leadoff 1,200-meter leg of the distance medley relay team that clocked a 12:50.80, joining junior Casey Lumpkin (Newtown, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) (400 leg), freshman Kerry Campbell (Carlisle, Pa./Trinity) (800 leg) and Epstein (mile leg).

Also competing was senior Vanessa Pabon (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford), who finished third in the long jump (16-10 1/2) and second in the triple jump (34-11 1/4).

Gettysburg opens its outdoor season March 19 at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational.
