Netters Drop 5-4 Decision to DII Catawba

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Gettysburg College men's tennis team dropped its second consecutive one-point match to a scholarship school, falling to Division II Catawba College 5-4 Tuesday morning.

Gettysburg (2-2), which fell 5-4 to the University of Charleston (W.Va.) on Sunday, split singles action to start its match with Catawba. Freshman Chris Curran (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and sophomore Sebastian Rodriguez (Plano, Texas/Plano West) each posted straight-set victories at the second and sixth flights, respectively. Curran defeated Uri Yarkoni 6-2, 6-0, while Rodriguez downed Shaun Bridgewater 6-3, 6-3.

Senior Kevin Raynes (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) split his first two sets against Cyle Petersen at No. 5, the former winning the first 6-4 and the latter taking the second 6-1. The clinching set went the way of the Bullet, however, as Raynes pulled out a 10-8 decision.

Catawba clinched the victory by taking the top two doubles matches. Curran and Raynes prevented the sweep, earning an 8-6 win over Petersen and Corey Eldridge at No. 3.

Gettysburg continues play in Hilton Head on Wednesday, March 10, against Trine University at 3 p.m.
