Abe Evans won his second match at the ASICS University National Championships.

AKRON, Ohio – Sophomore Abe Evans (Dover, Pa./Dover) and freshman Joe Fiore (Hicksville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) each competed at the ASICS University & FILA Cadet National Championships hosted by The University of Akron on April 8-11.

Evans placed fourth at 55kg/121 lbs in Greco Roman by winning one of his three matches. In a best-of-three bout with the Marine Corps’ Tou Fu Xiong, Evans won the opener 1-0 before falling 1-0 and 2-0. He won his next match 6-2, 4-2 over Cody Dill to earn a trip to the third-place match. He came up just shy of another win, falling to the Marines’ Mike Pena by a pair of 2-1 scores.

Competing in one of the deepest brackets in freestyle, Fiore dropped a pair of matches at 74 kg/163 lbs. He was pinned in his first match in 24 seconds by University of Iowa’s Ethen Lofthouse and he ended the day with a 4-3, 7-1 setback to Waynesburg University’s Alex Evanoff.

Evans and Fiore are both members of the Gettysburg College wrestling team under the direction of Head Coach Andy Vogel. Evans is the team’s top competitor at 125 pounds, while Fiore emerged as the Bullets’ starter at 157.
