GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College men's and women's cross country and track & field head coach
Steve Shutt has resigned, athletic director
David Wright has announced.
Shutt has spent the last four years at the helm of all four programs. His wife Julia received a promotion in her hometown of Butler, and they will be moving to northwestern Pennsylvania with their 1-one-year-old son, Simon.
The Gettysburg College athletic department is in the process of determining the future direction of the programs' coaching situation.
“I consider myself fortunate to have been a member of the Gettysburg College community for four years,” said Shutt. “It was a difficult decision to leave because the members of the track & field and cross country teams and the athletic department are dedicated and caring people who made my time at Gettysburg truly special. I look forward to seeing their continued success.”
In track & field, Shutt guided the men's team to its highest finish at the Centennial Conference Indoor Championships in school history in 2008, when the Bullets took second, and the team tied its best performance at the CC Outdoor Championships when it also finished second in 2008.
The women's track team also tied its best performance at the CC Outdoor Championships under Shutt when it placed second in 2008 before tying for sixth among 53 teams at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.
Individually, the Bullets have thrived under Shutt, breaking school records 29 times in 22 events. He has also steered his athletes to 12 NCAA provisional-qualifying performances and 107 All-CC finishes. In addition, Gettysburg has crowned 31 individual champions at the ECAC and CC meets over the last four years, with three advancing to the NCAA Division III Championships.
In cross country, Shutt coached Gettysburg's first NCAA qualifier in six years when
Kerrin Epstein '10 finished third at the 2009 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, the best individual performance by a Gettysburg runner at the meet in 26 years. As a team, the 2009 squad's placing (fifth) at the NCAA Regional was also Gettysburg's best in six years. Earlier in the season, Gettysburg earned a national ranking for two weeks, the Bullets first since 1992.
On the men's side, Shutt's Bullet cross country team cracked the top-10 at the NCAA Mideast Regional in each of the past two seasons. Gettysburg finished sixth in 2008, the team's best showing at the meet in eight years, and in 2009 the Bullets received votes in the national rankings midway through the season.
