WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team won its Centennial Conference opener over Washington & Lee University 27-15 and senior heavyweight Bobby Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) became the program's all-time wins leader in his weight class at the Washington & Jefferson College Quadrangular on Saturday.

Gettysburg (2-3, 1-0 CC) went 1-2 at the event, opening the day with losses to Washington & Jefferson (27-16) and Muskingum University (24-17) before beating conference foe Washington & Lee. Freshman Jared Leon (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and junior DJ Neri (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) each posted three wins for the Bullets, while Christopher, junior Matt Danielson (Bethesda, Md./Bullis School), and freshman Matt Spano (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) each earned a pair of wins.

Christopher passed Mike Pattanite '07 for the top spot on the program's heavyweight wins list with a 7-3 decision in his first bout against the host's Taylor Potts. He added a forfeit win against Washington & Lee to improve to 12-3 this season and 76-35 for his career.

The Bullets had to fight from behind to secure a win against the Generals. Washington & Lee won three of the first five bouts contested, securing a fall at 165 to take a 12-9 lead. Leon provided a big blow by pinning Daniel Igel in 2:23 and forfeits at 184 and heavyweight helped secure the win. Gettysburg's remaining wins came via forfeit at 133 and a 5-2 decision by Danielson at 149.

Gettysburg mounted late charges in both of its earlier matches, winning each bout at 174, 184, and heavyweight. Leon was perfect en route to improving to 19-7 on the year, securing an 11-1 major decision against Washington & Jefferson and squeaking out a 6-4 overtime win against Muskingum.

Neri improved to 4-3 with a pair of close wins. He beat the host's Stefen Firmstone 3-2 and edged Muskingum's Danny Dunn 4-2. Sophomore Kevin Poplaski (North Reading, Mass./St. John's Prep) ensured a perfect day at heavyweight for Gettysburg by putting up an 11-2 major decision against Muskingum to improve to 11-6 this season.

Gettysburg also received wins from Danielson and sophomore Joe Fiore (Hicksville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) against Muskingum. Danielson went 2-1 in his season debut by adding an 8-5 win over Kenny Poland, while Fiore took down Thomas Patterson by major decision 12-2 at 157 pounds.

Next up for Gettysburg is a conference match at McDaniel College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12.
