HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team closed the Centennial Conference regular season with a pair of setbacks to Stevens Institute of Technology and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, but the Bullets turned in a lop-sided 57-0 win over Yeshiva University on Saturday.
Gettysburg (6-13, 2-5 CC) logged its sixth win of the campaign with its third-highest (tied) scoring output in program history against Yeshiva (0-8). The Bullets were upended by host Stevens (13-11-1, 5-2 CC) 34-14 and No. 11 Merchant Marine (14-2, 7-0 CC) 30-8. The Mariners clinched their fourth-straight perfect conference regular season, adding a 29-10 win over runner-up Johns Hopkins University on Saturday.
The Orange and Blue put up a season-high six pins with three forfeits and a decision against Yeshiva. After a forfeit at 125, freshmen
Matt Spano (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and
Dan Traficanti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski School) notched back-to-back second-round pins at 133 and 141, respectively. Gettysburg added pins at 157, 165, and 174 before sophomore
Branden Strohl (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) capped the 57-point win with a 47-second pin in the heavyweight bout.
The victory was tied for Gettysburg's most lop-sided win since a 58-0 decision over Haverford College on Jan. 13, 1996 and it trailed only that match and a 60-0 win over York College on Feb. 3, 1990 for total points scored.
Gettysburg was unable to knock off two of the conference's top contenders in Stevens and Merchant Marine. Junior
Abe Evans (Dover, Pa./Dover) put the Bullets on the board against the Ducks with a 12-1 major decision at 125 pounds. Stevens would run off the next six decisions until senior
DJ Neri's (Fairfax Station, Va./W.T. Woodson) major decision (11-0) at 184. The Bullets closed the match with a forfeit win at heavyweight.
Gettysburg tested No. 11 Merchant Marine with decisions in half of the 10 bouts, but the Mariners came out on top of eight contests overall. Spano logged his second victory of the day with a 9-7 win over Patrick Graham at 133 and earned his 20th victory of the year. The Bullets made it a clean sweep in the heavyweight bouts with another forfeit.
Gettysburg closes the regular season with a non-conference match at home against Lycoming College on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.
