NEW YORK – The Gettysburg College wrestling team went 1-2 at a quad match at New York University Saturday afternoon.

The Bullets (4-4, 1-1 CC) opened the day with a 23-13 Centennial Conference loss to the host Violets before topping Plymouth State 35-15 and falling 28-15 to Elizabethtown College in a pair of non-conference matches.

Junior Marshall Puls had a memorable trip to his hometown, going 3-0 at 197 while earning his first two pins of the year. Freshman Zach Thomson and junior Kevin Poplaski also went 3-0, with Poplaski capturing both a major decision and a technical fall. Sophomore Matt Spano and freshman Tony Stanell (141) each went 2-1 on the day.

The Violets jumped to a 17-3 lead against the Bullets before Gettysburg won three of the last five bouts, with Poplaski finishing the match with his major decision at 285. But the top performance against NYU may have come at 165, where Thomson decisioned previously undefeated and third-ranked David Rice by an 8-4 count.

The Bullets never trailed against Plymouth State, getting forfeits at two of the first three weight classes to build a 16-0 lead. Spano picked up an 8-0 major decision at 133 before Thomson recorded a technical fall at 165. Puls followed up with a 2:00 pin before Poplaski registered a 16-0 technical fall.

As it did in the NYU match, Gettysburg captured three of the final five bouts, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 19-3 Blue Jay lead. Puls recorded his fall at 1:55.

With his three wins, Thomson ran his season record to 24-1 while Spano also reached 20 wins and is now 20-8. Poplaski improved to 19-9.

The Bullets return to action next Saturday, when they host Muhlenberg College and Ursinus College in a Centennial Conference tri-match starting at noon.
