Sara Kinsley tied the career school record for blocked shots as Gettysburg held off a late rally to beat the University of Scranton 46-41 in the first round of the Gettysburg Days Inn Tournament Monday evening in Bream Gymnasium.
With the win, the Bullets (4-5) move on to the tournament championship game, where they will aim for their third straight Days Inn title as they face Messiah College, a 73-43 winner over Neumann University in the other first-round game. The championship game will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Kinsley missed her fourth double-double of the season by a rebound, finishing with 11 points and nine boards. Her lone block of the night gave her 147 for her career, tying the Bullets all-time mark set by Katie Reilly '07 from 2003-07.
Sophomore guard
Cori Younghans added 10 points for the Bullets while sophomore forward
Caroline Murphy contributed eight points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Gettysburg shot just 30.2 percent but held a 55-41 advantage on the glass.
Scranton (5-6), which was held to 19.7 percent shooting, was led by junior guard Kristina Hiltunen, who notched 10 points. Senior guard Sidney Jacques added eight points for the Lady Royals while freshman guard Lindsay Fluehr grabbed seven boards.
In a rematch of last year's Days Inn championship game, the Bullets trailed just twice for the game, although Scranton trimmed an eight-point first-half deficit down to one with less than two minutes left following a 7-0 run. A lay-up from Erin Boggan made it 42-41 with 1:55 left, but it would turn out to be Scranton's final points. The Royals would miss their next three shots before committing a turnover.
In the meantime, Kinsley gave the Bullets some breathing room with a lay-up at the 1:25 mark before Murphy hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left to seal the win.
Both teams struggled offensively out of the gates, and Scranton led just 3-2 over six minutes into the game. The Bullets used a 7-2 spurt to assume their first eight-point advantage (15-7) following a Younghans lay-up with 7:10 on the first-half clock. An Oursler bucket made it 17-9 with 4:50 remaining in the opening period, but the Lady Royals scored the last four points of the half to cut it to 17-13 at the break.
Gettysburg pushed its advantage to seven (32-25) with 10:46 left, but the Royals came back with the next six points to pull to within one. A lay-up from senior forward
Lauren Dadigan and a pair of Kinsley free throws gave the Bullets their final eight-point lead (42-34) with 5:00 left.
