GETTYSBURG, Pa. – McDaniel's Joe Camlin won 6-5 at heavyweight to break a 21-all tie, giving the Green Terror a 24-21 victory in a Centennial Conference nailbiter Wednesday evening in Bream Gymnasium.
The Bullets (4-6, 1-3 CC) trailed 18-9 at the midway point of the match before pulling even on a pin and a decision. However, McDaniel (3-7, 2-3 CC) earned decisions in two of the final three bouts to come away with the win.
In the deciding contest, Gettysburg junior
Kevin Poplaski led 2-1 after the first period and 4-3 heading into the final stanza. But Camlin tied it with an early escape, then took a 6-4 lead on a takedown with 1:00 left. Poplaski pulled to within one on an escape with 25 seconds remaining, but Camlin held on down the stretch.
The Bullets jumped to a 9-0 lead, getting a decision from senior
Abe Evans at 125 and a pin from sophomore
Matt Spano at 133 – his seventh fall of the season. But that's when the Green Terror ran off 18 unanswered points on a pair of pins and a forfeit at 149 to gain its 18-9 advantage.
Freshman
Zach Thomson, ranked No. 4 in Division III at 165 by d3wrestle.com and No. 5 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), made it a three-point match with his team-leading eighth pin of the season. With the fall, Thomson ran his record to 26-1 with his ninth win in a row.
Sophomore
Jared Leon tied it at 18-18 with a 6-1 victory at 174, but McDaniel answered with a decision at 184 to go up 21-18. Junior
Marshall Puls evened the score again for the Bullets following his 8-5 decision at 197, setting up the classic finish.
