Wrestling Goes 2-1 at Home Quad

Evans, Leon, Thomson Go 3-0

Jared Leon went 3-0 with a pin and major decision on Saturday.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Abe Evans, sophomore Jared Leon, and freshman Zach Thomson all went 3-0 as the Gettysburg College wrestling team went 2-1 at its home quad match Saturday afternoon in Bream Gymnasium.

The Bullets (3-1, 1-0 CC) started the day with a 31-16 win over Washington & Lee University in their Centennial Conference opener. Gettysburg then defeated Washington & Jefferson College 25-23 before dropping a 31-9 decision to Hunter College in a pair of non-conference affairs.

Evans earned a decision and picked up a pair of forfeits at 125 pounds to improve to 17-5. Leon, who scored his fourth pin of the season to go with a major decision at 174, improved to 14-6, and Thompson ran his record to 21-1 with three decisions at 165. Sophomore Mike Sheehan contributed a pin and a major decision.

Against W&L, the Bullets were the beneficiaries of four forfeits but fell behind 16-6. However, Gettysburg scored 25 unanswered points to win going away. Sheehan notched his second  pin of the year at 184 (3:34) while Leon picked up his major, winning 16-2, to make it 19-16. The Generals forfeited the last two bouts.

Gettysburg led from start to finish against Washington & Jefferson and survived a late President surge. A forfeit at 125 and a pin from sophomore Matt Spano – his sixth of the year and 18th victory of the season – at 133 put the Orange & Blue up 12-0. After W&J rallied to take a 14-12 lead, the Bullets ran off nine straight points, getting a 4-2 overtime decision from Thomson, a pin (2:08) from Leon, and a 10-1 major from Sheehan. The Presidents came back with a pin at 197 and a decision at heavyweight but it wasn't enough.

In his first action of the day, Evans gave the Bullets a 3-0 lead with a 6-1 decision to start off his team's match against Hunter. However, the Hawks took command with a 19-0 run that included a pin and a major decision. Gettysburg pulled to within 10 (19-9) when Thompson and Leon posted back-to-back decisions, but Hunter closed the match with a pin followed by two decisions.

Gettysburg returns to the mat next Saturday, when it wrestles at New York University in a tri-match that includes Elizabethtown College.
