ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Gettysburg College wrestling team opened its dual schedule with a pair of victories at the Mount Union University Duals on Saturday.
 
Gettysburg went 2-2 at the event, defeating Washington & Jefferson College 25-16 and Muskingum University 39-3 before falling to Mount Union 39-8 and Thiel College 31-9.
 
Sophomore Zach Thomson received the Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler Award after going 4-0 with a pin, a technical fall, a major decision, and a decision at 174 pounds. Thomson helped engineer a comeback against Washington & Jefferson to start the day as his second-round fall against Stephen Murray ended a four-match winning streak by the Presidents and cut the lead to 16-9.
 
After an injury default pulled the Bullets to 16-15, seniors Marshall Puls and Kevin Poplaski capped the victory with a major decision (9-1) and technical fall (16-0) at 197 and heavyweight, respectively. Junior Matt Spano put the Bullets on the board initially with a 6-0 decision over Bryan Myers at 133.
 
Gettysburg nearly shut out Muskingum, winning each of the first eight matches. Sophomore Matt Laux started the match with a first-round pin at 125, the first of three falls in the match for the Bullets. Spano added a 9-1 major decision and freshman Manny Markantone notched another first-round fall. Thomson added a 15-0 technical fall and freshman heavyweight Nick Diunizio capped the 42-3 win with another first-round pin.
 
Spano and Thomson each improved to 4-0 on the day after combining for four of Gettysburg's five wins in the setbacks to Mount Union and Thiel. Spano notched a major decision against Mount Union (9-0) and a decision against Thiel (10-3), while Thomson recorded a 10-0 major decision against the hosts and a 7-4 victory over Thiel's Jerrold Roosa. Freshman Luke Iorio polished off a 3-0 day with a 6-4 decision over Thiel's Trent Kiesling.
 
Next up for Gettysburg is the two-day Messiah College Petrofes Tournament beginning on Friday, Nov. 30.
