GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Matt Spano (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and sophomore
Zach Thomson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) each logged major decisions as the Gettysburg College wrestling team fell to No. 20 York (Pa.) College 25-14 inside Bream Gym Wednesday night.
Trailing 3-0, Spano gave Gettysburg (2-3) a lead with a 9-0 win over Chase Colley at 133 pounds. The junior posted takedowns in each of the first two periods before closing with a takedown and near-fall in the final frame. Spano improved to 9-6 with the victory.
At 141, Charles Glatz managed a third-period escape against freshman
Cody Keane (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and tacked on the riding-time point for a 2-0 win. That kicked off a four-match winning streak by York (6-3) which included a pin, major decision, and decision.
Thomson ended York's run with a dominating performance against Kam Mueller at 174. The sophomore, ranked third in the nation, established the lead with a quick takedown and near-fall in the first round. After allowing Mueller to escape, Thomson would tally another takedown in the frame to take a 7-1 lead. He would cap the match with points via a reversal, near-fall, escape, and riding-time advantage en route to improving to 12-1 on the year.
Freshman
Luke Iorio (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Jeff Goldhagen turned in a heated battle at 184. After a scoreless opening stanza, Goldhagen scored a reversal to take the lead. Iorio would earn the escape before the end of the period to pull to 2-1. In the third frame, Iorio opened with an escape and picked up a takedown to take a 4-2 lead. The Bullet first-year tacked on a near-fall before an escape by Goldhagen to win 6-3 and improve to 8-6.
York secured the team victory with a pin by Kyle Minogue at 197. Senior heavyweight
Kevin Poplaski (North Reading, Mass./St. John's Prep) capped the match with a 3-1 overtime win over Zach Coleman. The grapplers exchanged escapes to send the match to sudden victory. Poplaski wasted no time in ending the contest, grabbing Coleman's legs and sending him to the mat just seconds into the period. The Bullet senior improved to 8-2 with the win.
Gettysburg will resume competition on Jan. 5 at the Ursinus College North-South Duals.
