BALTIMORE – Freshman Zach Thomson picked up a big win one-point victory at 165, but the Gettysburg College wrestling team dropped a pair of matches by a total of five points in a Centennial Conference quad at Johns Hopkins University on Sunday.

The Bullets (7-14, 2-6 CC) opened the day with a 21-19 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology before falling 22-19 to Merchant Marine.

Thomson, senior Abe Evans, and junior Kevin Poplaski all finished 2-0 for Gettysburg.

Behind a forfeit at 125, a major decision from sophomore Matt Spano at 133, and a decision from junior Joe Fiore at 157, the Bullets led 13-9 against Stevens heading into Thomson's bout. Entering the day ranked third nationally by d3wrestle.com and the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), Thomson found himself pitted against eighth-ranked Joey Favia. Thomson fell behind early but rallied to take a big lead, then held off a rally from Favia to win 12-11, improving to 37-1 on the season and pushing his winning streak to 20.

The Ducks (12-7, 6-1 CC) went on to win the next three bouts, including a pin at 184, to take a 21-16 heading into the heavyweight tilt. Poplaski battled Tyler Maher to a 3-3 draw after regulation and two overtimes but earned the victory on riding time.

Against Merchant Marine, Evans spotted the Bullets a 6-0  lead with his fourth pin of the season. However, the Mariners (6-7, 5-2 CC) won the next four bouts, including a pin at 149, to assume a 15-6 advantage. Thomson stopped the run with a 10-3 win, but a decision and major decision put Merchant Marine up 22-9. Junior Marshall Puls won by injury default before Poplaski closed the day with a 13-3 major decision.

Gettysburg competes in its final dual match when it visits Lycoming College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
