GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Zach Thomson went 3-0 with a pair of pins at 165 to run his record to 33-1 as the Gettysburg College wrestling team finished 1-2 at a home non-conference quad meet Saturday afternoon in Bream Gymnasium.

The Bullets (6-11), who forfeited a pair of weight classes in all three matches, started with a 27-18 loss to King's College before dropping a 34-18 decision to 24th-ranked Messiah College. Gettysburg closed the day with a 38-4 win over Penn State-Beaver. Gettysburg split the eight bouts it wrestled with both King's and Messiah.

Thomson extended his winning streak to 16 and moved into sixth on Gettysburg's single-season wins list. 

Senior Abe Evans also went 3-0 at 125 to push his season record to 24-7 while junior Marshall Puls was 2-0 with a pin. Sophomore Matt Spano was 2-1 with a pin – his ninth of the year – at 133 to improve to 28-9 while junior Kevin Poplaski also finished 2-1 with his team-best third technical fall of the year at heavyweight. Poplaski is now 24-13.

The Bullets jumped to a 9-0 lead against King's as Evans and Spano opened with a decision and fall, respectively. The Monarchs came back to score the next 12 points but a pin from Thomson put Gettysburg up 15-12. However, a forfeit at 174 and a decision at 184 gave King's a 24-15 lead, and after Puls earned a decision at 197, Peter Dwyer secured the Monarchs' victory with a close 4-3 win at 285.

The win was never in doubt for Messiah, which won four straight bouts and opened a 22-3 lead after Evans won by decision leading off. However, the Bullets claimed three of the last five match-ups, including another pin from Thomson and a fall by Puls.

In its final match of the day, Gettysburg found itself pitted against a short-handed Penn State-Beaver team. Competing in their inaugural season, the Lions brought just five wrestlers but only three were able to compete against the Bullets. Poplaski closed the meet on a high note with a 16-0 technical fall.

Gettysburg competes in its final home dual meet on Wednesday, when it wrestles Franklin & Marshall College in a non-conference affair.
