Poplaski Leads Bullets in Split

Gettysburg Falls to D-I F&M, Defeats Muhlenberg

Kevin Poplaski went 2-0 with a major decision and technical fall.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Kevin Poplaski enjoyed a big night, posting a major decision and a technical fall as the Gettysburg College wrestling team earned a split on Senior Night in Bream Gymnasium Wednesday evening.

The Bullets (7-12, 2-4 CC) opened with a 29-16 loss to Division I Franklin & Marshall College but, on the strength of five forfeits, defeated Muhlenberg College 35-15 in a Centennial Conference match.

Gettysburg's two seniors – Abe Evans and Anthony Iorio – were honored in a brief ceremony at the start of the night.

The Bullets jumped to a 6-0 lead on decisions from Evans at 125 and sophomore Matt Spano at 133. However, the Diplomats (2-12) won six of the last eight bouts, including pins at 141 and 197 and a forfeit at 174. Gettysburg received a forfeit at 165 and an 11-3 major decision from Poplaski at heavyweight.

Muhlenberg (0-7, 0-7 CC) sent just four wrestlers to the mat but won three of those bouts, including pins at 149 and 184. Poplaski provided the Bullets with their only non-forfeited win, posting a 19-3 technical fall while improving to 26-13.

Evans and Spano were the beneficiaries of forfeits against Muhlenberg to finish the night 2-0. Evans pushed his record to 26-7 while Spano moved to 30-9, joining teammate Zach Thomson  as one of just four Gettysburg wrestlers to earn 30 wins in a season.

Thomson did not have to break a sweat in his 2-0 night, using a pair of forfeits at 165 to extend his winning streak to 18 and push his season mark to 35-1. He is now third all-time in school history in single-season wins, trailing only the Gettysburg record of 40 victories shared by Jake Dell (1997-98) and Matt Shank (2004-05).

Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday, when it competes in a Centennial Conference quad-match at Johns Hopkins University at 11 a.m. The Bullets will wrestle against Stevens Institute and Merchant Marine.
