Top Moment No. 5: Football’s Last-Second Victory

Smith-to-Twer Hail Mary quells Ursinus comeback

The football team celebrates after its last-second win over Ursinus.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – In terms of sheer excitement, it's hard to beat top moment No. 5 in Gettysburg College athletics from 2011-12.

With the game tied at 34-all and five seconds showing on the clock, Aden Twer '14 hauled in a 32-yard Hail Mary pass from Kody Smith '13 in the end zone and fell to the turf as time expired, giving the football team a dramatic 40-34 victory over Ursinus College in its Centennial Conference opener at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on September 10.

A delirious Bullet sideline piled on Twer in the end zone after surviving a furious Ursinus rally. The Bears erased a 34-10 deficit with a 24-0 run, including a touchdown and two-point conversion with 47 seconds left that evened the score. But on the ensuing drive, Smith rushed 12 yards for a first down to put the Bullets into Ursinus territory, and Ted Delia '13 also moved the chains with an eight-yard carry on fourth-and-two, setting up Smith and Twer's heroics.

It was just the third time in Centennial Conference history, and the first time since the conference's inaugural season in 1983, that a team won with a touchdown on the final play of the game.

It turned out to be a coming-out of sorts for Twer, who ended the hot and humid afternoon with five catches for 179 yards and a school record-tying three touchdowns. The wideout eventually broke a 47-year-old Gettysburg record for touchdowns in a season (12) while finishing second in receiving yards, posting just the second 1,000-yard season in school history with 1,079. Smith, who threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns against Ursinus, also turned in a stellar campaign, tossing 17 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Both players earned a spot on the All-Centennial Conference Second Team.
