Messiah Open Results
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference matches inside Bream Gym Saturday afternoon. The Bullets opened with a 30-16 win over Muhlenberg College before falling 49-0 to No. 23 Ursinus College.
Gettysburg (9-7, 2-6 CC) fell behind early against Muhlenberg (2-6, 2-5 CC). The Mules won the opening two bouts by major decision and decision to jump out to a 7-0 advantage.
Freshman
Jake Bracken (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) bounced back from a 4-0 deficit against Anthony Calantoni to win 6-4 at 141 pounds. After tying the match with a takedown in the second period, Bracken posted the only points in the third frame with a takedown. Fellow first-year
Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) also won a close bout against Anthony Ware at 149, racking enough riding time to clinch the winning point in a 3-2 decision.
Trailing 7-6 in the team score, the Bullets recorded four consecutive pins to clinch the victory. Sophomore
Brandon Carcuffe (Oxford, N.J./West Morris Central) started the streak with a fall with 52 seconds left in the third period at 157. Senior
Pat Thomas (Jamesport, N.Y./Riverhead) suffered an early takedown to Will Lamb at 165, but the Bullet pulled off a reversal and turned the advantage into a pin at 2:13.
Junior
Tyler Cunningham (East Berlin, Conn./Xavier) wasted no time against Jake Gordon at 174 pounds, securing an early takedown and putting Gordon's shoulders to the mat in 1:14. Sophomore
Camden Stoops (East Prospect, Pa./Eastern York) chalked up another first-period pin for Gettysburg, tossing Zach Goldrosen in 2:47.
Ursinus (11-2, 6-2 CC) shut out Gettysburg in the seven matches contested. Merrigan turned in the closest bout, pulling off two reversals in a 9-4 loss to Derek Arnold, who entered the match ranked eighth in the nation at 149 pounds.
Another contingent of Bullet grapplers headed to Messiah College to compete in the Messiah Open. Freshman
Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) paced the team with a third-place finish at 125 pounds. Ogozalek won his opening two bouts by major decisions (15-1 and 14-4) before getting bounced in the semifinals by eventual champ Connor Sheehan of Millersville University. In the consolation bracket, Ogozalek picked up a pin (1:45) before beating Lake Laughman of York (Pa.) College 5-3 in the third-place bout.
Freshman
Dan McGurl (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) posted a pair of pins in the heavyweight bracket, while fellow first-years
Louie Carusillo (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic),
Brian Gianforte (Brielle, N.J./Mansquan), and
Mike Burek (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) each managed one win at 141, 165, and heavyweight, respectively.
Next up for the Bullets is the Centennial Conference Championship hosted by McDaniel College on Feb. 14. Opening matches begin at 10 a.m.
