Complete Brackets
ROANOKE, Va. – Freshman
Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) posted a pair of victories to pace the Gettysburg College wrestling team at the NCAA Division III East Regional inside the Berglund Center on Sunday.
Merrigan narrowly missed an opportunity to place at the regional event, going 2-2 in the bracket for 149 pounds. He made the most of his regional debut, scoring a 9-0 major decision over Patrick Brown of the University of Scranton. Merrigan's next foe was top-ranked Vincent Fava of Delaware Valley College, who placed third at the national championship last year and finished as the regional runner-up on Sunday. Fava sent the Bullet first-year to the consolation bracket with a 16-6 major decision.
Merrigan next faced off with Johns Hopkins University's Tommy Grifa for the third time in just over a month. While Grifa won the first two meetings in close decisions, including a 7-5 overtime victory in the Centennial Conference Championship two weeks ago, the Bullet grappler came through on Sunday, rebounding from a 5-3 deficit to pull off a 7-5 decision in the first tiebreaker.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Merrigan turned in extra time on the mat once again, but the decision favored his foe Dylan Thorsen of The College of New Jersey 7-5 in the first sudden victory period. Thorsen was a national qualifier last season and placed sixth in Sunday's regional.
Merrigan closed the season as Gettysburg's wins leader with a record of 22-15. It was the best total by a Bullet first-year since Zach Thomson won a school-record 41 bouts in 2011-12.
Junior
Tyler Cunningham (East Berlin, Conn./Xavier) and sophomore
Joey Bragg (Bird in Hand, Pa./Conestoga Valley) picked up wins at 174 and 285, respectively. Cunningham scored an 8-2 decision over Washington & Lee University's Sal Diaz in a preliminary bout, while Bragg posted a 7-2 win over New York University's Brian Anderson in his first consolation match.
Gettysburg finished 16th overall in the team standings. Delaware Valley edged out New York University for the team title with 123 points.
