HOBOKEN, N.J. – Sophomore heavyweight
Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) remained unbeaten this season after picking up a pair of decisions against Centennial Conference opponents on Saturday.
Gettysburg (7-4, 1-2 CC) wasn't as fortunate as its heavyweight, dropping both team decisions. The Bullets fell to seventh-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology (16-0, 2-0 CC) 46-3 before being edged by United States Merchant Marine Academy (4-7, 2-2 CC) 20-19.
Powered by four nationally-ranked wrestlers, Stevens won each of the first nine bouts against Gettysburg. Triandafilou put a halt to the shutout by securing a 9-2 win over Pete Andrich.
Gettysburg won three of the first four bouts against Merchant Marine with a forfeit at 125 and back-to-back decisions by freshmen
Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) and
Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) at 141 (4-0) and 149 (3-1), respectively.
The Mariners won the next two matches before sophomore
Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) recorded a 13-2 major decision at 174 to push the Bullets in front 16-14.
Merchant Marine secured the team win with a pair of decisions in the next two matches. In a rematch of last season's Centennial Conference Championships semifinal, Triandafilou avenged his first collegiate loss by beating Brandon Joest 1-0. The Gettysburg sophomore, who came in ranked fifth by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, improved to 16-0 this season.
Gettysburg faces Washington & Lee University and Johns Hopkins University in an event hosted by McDaniel College next Saturday at noon.
