Men's Cross Country

2017 Men's Cross Country Season Recap

The Gettysburg College men's cross country team wrapped up another season competing in the highly-competitive Centennial Conference and NCAA Division III Mideast Region under eighth-year head coach Aubrey Shenk.

Top Moments:
  • The Bullets won a meet title for the second time in three years, capturing the Delaware Valley Invitational on Sept. 23. Alex Petrecca '19 led the Bullets, placing second out of 126 competitors. Sam Sheldon '20 (fifth), Matt Robinson '19 (seventh), and Dylan McKeever '21 (10th) also broke the top-10. Gettysburg also won the Cairn Invitational in 2015.
  • The Orange and Blue finished 12th out of 36 teams in a highly-competitive field in the "White" race of the Paul Short Run. Robinson came in 47th out of 283 competitors to lead the Bullets, who posted just a 31-second split among its top-five runners.
  • Gettysburg served as the host site of the Centennial Conference (CC) Championships, where Robinson led the Bullets with a 35th-place finish.

Leading the Pack: Petrecca established himself as the team's frontrunner this past season, finishing as Gettysburg's No. 1 runner in six of the team's eight varsity races. He ran the team's fastest time of the season for the 8,000-meter racing distance with his personal-record (PR)-time of 27:09 at both the Gettysburg Invitational and the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional. Robinson was also Gettysburg's No. 1 runner in two meets, and he ran a PR of 27:10 at the CC Championships.

Fast Start: Sheldon enjoyed a strong debut season for the Bullet cross country team, finishing as the squad's No. 2 runner in seven of his eight races. He clocked a PR of 27:12 at the Paul Short Run and finished within 16 seconds of Gettysburg's No. 1 runner on five occasions.

Bullets Run in 52nd Little Three Meet: Gettysburg competed in the 52nd annual Little Three Men's Cross Country Meet, one of the oldest cross country races of its kind in the region, on Sept. 8 at Dickinson College. The Bullets defeated Franklin & Marshall College 22-39 but lost to No. 35 Dickinson 50-15. The meet rotates between Gettysburg, Dickinson, and F&M and has been held continuously every year among the same three schools since 1966 (a women's race was added in 1981).

Thank You Seniors: Gettysburg will bid farewell to four seniors in Andy Milone '18, Caleb Parker '18, Harry Thoman '18, and Bobby Weisensee '18.

Looking Ahead: The future is bright for the Bullets, who stand to return 17 harriers for the 2018 season, including every runner who scored as one of the team's top-five runners this past year. Petrecca, Robinson, and Sheldon scored in all eight varsity races while Connor Berson '21 and Mike Miller '19 broke the top-five in seven and five meets, respectively. In addition, Aren Heitmann '20 and Dylan McKeever '21 scored in three varsity races.
