Wrestling Splits Centennial Duals

Gettysburg defeats Muhlenberg, falls to Ursinus

Quinn Merrigan '18 won both of his matches against Muhlenberg and Ursinus.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team split a pair of dual matches to close out the Centennial Conference regular season schedule on Saturday inside Bream Gym.

Gettysburg (10-6, 4-3 CC) opened the day with a 31-12 victory over Muhlenberg College (10-11, 1-6 CC) to clinch its first 10-win season in 17 years. The Bullets dropped the second contest 32-10 to Ursinus College (15-3, 6-1 CC).

The lightweights gave Gettysburg an early advantage against Muhlenberg, winning each of the first three bouts. Junior Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) secured a 12-5 win at 125 before classmate Noah Malamut (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep) picked up a 12-4 major decision at 133. Freshman Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) edged Quentin Bernhard 3-2 with the riding time point at 141 to give the hosts a 10-0 lead.

After Muhlenberg secured a technical fall to cut the deficit in half, the Bullets ran off victories in each of the next three matches. Freshman Tristan Chen (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) opened the streak with a 10-9 win at 157. Junior Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) won by injury default in the first period to push Gettysburg's lead to 19-5.

Sophomore Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) gave up an early takedown to Jake Gordon, but Ebert quickly recovered with seven-straight points before locking down a first-period pin (2:23). Sophomore Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) closed the victory with his fourth pin of the season with 58 seconds left in the heavyweight match.

Ursinus opened its contest with Gettysburg by winning four of the first five bouts to take a 20-3 lead in the team score. Devlin provided the Bullets their lone win, scoring a 3-0 decision at 141 and improving to 26-8 on the year.

Merrigan and Ebert posted back-to-back wins at 165 and 174, respectively. Merrigan tallied five points in the opening period on the way to a 7-4 decision over Zachary Goranson, while Ebert ran off the final nine points on the way to a 13-2 major decision over Corey Markovitch.

The final bout was the most exciting as Triandafilou, who came into the day ranked fifth in the country, squared off with Matan Peleg. The two exchanged escapes in regulation and went scoreless in the first overtime session. In the opening half of the tiebreaker period, Peleg managed to maintain his hold on Triandafilou throughout the frame. The Ursinus heavyweight escaped in the second half of the tiebreaker and held off the Gettysburg sophomore's advances for a 2-1 win. The loss was Triandafilou's first of the season (20-1).

A group of Gettysburg wrestlers also competed in the non-scoring Messiah College open. Freshman Zak Hermann (Levittown, N.Y./Chaminade) picked up a pin (2:36) and a decision (5-1) in the heavyweight bracket, while first-year Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) earned a 6-0 decision at 149 pounds.

Gettysburg heads to the Centennial Conference Championship hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology next Saturday, Feb. 11. Opening bouts are set for 10 a.m.
