GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Six new members will be added to the Gettysburg College Hall of Athletic Honor during a special ceremony as part of Homecoming Weekend on Sept. 15.
Since 1978, the Orange and Blue Club has overseen the recognition of the College's outstanding former student-athletes with selection to the Hall of Athletic Honor. This year's class includes
Seth Bendian '87 (Baseball, Football),
Sue Cannon '82 (Field Hockey, Lacrosse),
Samantha Chereb '93 (Volleyball),
Wendy Elles '96 (Soccer),
Todd Peters '98 (Swimming), and
Greg Stevcic '98 (Soccer, Swimming). The newest additions raise the total number of inductees to 232 over the last 39 years.
Bendian was a two-sport competitor through his sophomore season before concentrating his time on baseball in his final two campaigns. On the gridiron, the Teaneck, N.J., native competed at defensive back and kick returner and helped Gettysburg claim a pair of Centennial Conference titles. In 1984, he racked up 308 yards on 17 kick/punt returns as the team went 8-2. Bendian was a sparkplug on the baseball diamond in leading the Bullets to two Middle Atlantic Conference championships in 1986 and 1987. Twice he was named All-MAC First Team and he was tagged MAC Southern Division Most Valuable Player in 1987. During his senior season Bendian hit a blistering .451 with 21 runs scored against conference foes. The speedy second baseman remains the program's all-time leader in stolen bases with 68. He posted a .344 career batting average with 104 runs, 129 hits, and 46 RBI.
Cannon was a versatile athlete that helped lead the field hockey and lacrosse programs to new heights. Playing at right wing on the field hockey team, she helped break down opposing defenses and set the stage for the team's top scorers. After winning the MAC title in 1979, the Bullets captured the conference, regional, and national championships the following season. As a senior, Cannon was named All-MAC Southern Division First Team after appearing in all but one game and tallying three goals and two assists. Her first experience with lacrosse came at Gettysburg, but that didn't stop the Meadowbrook, Pa., native from making an impact. She helped the team capture the MAC title and finish fifth in the nation in 1981.
Chereb was an all-around performer for the volleyball team. She was a two-time MAC Southwest All-Star as an outside hitter and was tabbed to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-East Region First Team in 1991 after leading the program to its first appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs. The native of East Setauket, N.Y., led the Bullets in kills in each of her final three campaigns, including racking up 502 as a junior. The Bullets finished with an incredible four-year record of 153-34 and Chereb finished as the all-time leader in kills (1,685), attack attempts (3,223), aces (454), digs (1,343), and points (2,284.5).
Elles carved her legacy on the defensive side of the field and was a four-time first-team all-conference selection, earning one nod in the MAC and three in the Centennial Conference. The native of Branford, Conn., also earned four all-region accolades as Gettysburg emerged as one of the top programs in the country. Elles helped the Bullets claim the first two conference titles in program history and make the first two trips to the national playoffs in 1993 and 1994. In 1995, she was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-America Third Team, All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team, All-CC First Team, and CC Player of the Year. Elles capped her career with 10 goals and 10 assists in 70 matches, while helping the Bullets post a record of 51-21.
From the outset of his career, Peters was in line to be one of Gettysburg's top swimmers. He won five conference championships as a freshman and would finish his tenure as a 15-time Centennial champ overall. In 1998, the native of Riverside, Conn., swept the 50-yard, 100-yard, and 200-yard freestyle races on the way to being named the CC Outstanding Performer. He guided Gettysburg to four conference titles and an impressive 29-3 dual meet record. As a senior, Peters claimed All-America status in three relays as the team set a program record with a 12th-place showing at the national event. He closed his career holding five school records.
The swimming program gets a double-dose of recognition this fall as Stevcic joins his former teammate Peters. The Medford, N.J., native was a four-year letterwinner in both swimming and soccer during his time at Gettysburg. He was a consistent performer in swimming, making the conference finals four times in the 200-yard individual medley and helping the team win four conference titles. His star shined brightest on the pitch where he was a three-time all-conference and three-time all-region performer. Stevcic was a prolific scorer and set program records with 21 goals and 49 points in 1995. He dished out a school-record 15 assists and was named NSCAA All-America First Team in 1997. Stevcic finished his career as the all-time leader in goals (45), assists (33), and points (123). He guided Gettysburg to a pair of trips to the NCAA playoffs in 1995 and 1997 and a 58-15-6 overall record.
