LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior Ty Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) was named the Most Outstanding Male Performer for the second time in his career and the Gettysburg College men's swimming team put the finishing touches on a dominant showing at the Centennial Conference Championships Sunday night at Franklin & Marshall College, piling up 759.5 points to win the team title by 216 points over runner-up Swarthmore College.
 
Dougherty won two more events to close out yet another tremendous performance at the meet. On Sunday, he won his third-straight 100-freestyle title in an NCAA B-cut of 44.48 seconds, then rallied the Bullets to victory in the 400-freestyle relay in 3:02.76. For the meet, Dougherty won five events, earned three NCAA B-cuts, and set a meet and conference record in the 100-breaststroke. He swept the 50-freestyle, 100-freestyle, and 100-breaststroke for the third year in a row. Dougherty was also named the CC Most Outstanding Performer at the 2016 championship.
 
The Bullets captured their 15th Centennial Conference title and their seventh over the last eight years. It was also the 42nd Centennial or Middle Atlantic Conference men's or women's title for Gettysburg head coach Mike Rawleigh.
 
In the 400-free relay, Gettysburg trailed by over a second heading into the anchor leg, when Dougherty closed in 44.13 seconds, handing the Bullets a 1.48-second victory over F&M. Swimming the first three legs for Gettysburg were freshman Aedan Collins (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), junior Parker Sorenson (Evergreen, Colo./home-schooled), and sophomore Ogden Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin).
 
The Bullets also won the consolation final in the same event, with freshman Brian Berry (Canton, Conn./Canton), freshman Oliver Yancey (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), freshman Daniel Petrillo (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), and junior Francisco Nieves (Alexandria, Va./Edison) clocking a 3:08.93 to come in ninth overall.
 
Gettysburg also did much of its damage in the 100-freestyle, with Dougherty leading the way with a 0.62-second victory. Two other Bullets also reached the championship final in the event, including Collins, who claimed the bronze in 46.64, and Sorenson, who placed seventh in 47.08. In the consolation final, Leyens placed ninth in 46.98, Berry took 11th in 47.46, and Nieves came in 14th in 47.71.
 
Freshman Duncan Proxmire (McLean, Va./Langley) also came away with a medal on Sunday, capturing the silver in the 1,650-freestyle in an NCAA B-cut of 16:11.72. Sophomore Jeff Ragatz (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) placed fifth in the 200-backstroke in 1:54.08, as did classmate Adam Dias (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) in the 200-breastroke (2:07.29). Sophomore Josh Parker (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) contributed a seventh-place showing in the 1,650-freestyle (16:43.12) while freshman Jack Edelson (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Senior) came in seventh in the 200-butterfly (1:56.24).
 
Junior Jakob Hegna (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) placed ninth in the 200-backstroke (1:56.72) while senior Ian Schrock (State College, Pa./State College) was 10th in the same event (1:57.20). Finishing 11th were junior Ernie Ribera (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) in the 1,650-freestyle (17:11.05) and Yancey in the 200-breaststroke (2:11.59) while sophomore Alex Howard (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) came in 15th in the 200-butterfly (1:59.69).
 
The Bullets will now hope to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships March 21-24 in Indianapolis; selections will be announced later this month.
