COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Gettysburg earned 5-1 victories over both Swarthmore and Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) playoff action on Saturday afternoon at E. Frost Snell Field. With the wins, the Bullets advance to the championship game on Sunday afternoon, awaiting the winner of Swarthmore and Ursinus.
Heading into the playoffs, sophomore right-hander Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) needed just four strike outs to become Gettysburg’s career strike out leader. After striking out seven in game one, she became the school’s career leader with 269. Game two saw Rubino fan 13 of the 26 batters she faced for a total of 282 career strike outs.
Rubino earned the win in both games, pitching 14 complete innings. She allowed eight hits and five walks on the day, and both runs against her were unearned. She improved to 17-6 on the season with the wins.
Gettysburg (23-13) sophomore shortstop Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) was 4-for-6 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored to pace the Bullets’ offense. She was a perfect 3-for-3 in game one. Senior third baseman Megan Dean (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and junior left fielder Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) each recorded three hits on the day. Dean added a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while Sagaities tallied a double and a home run for four RBI and two runs scored.
In game one against the Garnet (22-12), Gettysburg wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. The Bullets scored a run in the top of the first on two hits for an early lead. Sagaities led off the game with a double to left field. Dean’s bunt advanced her to third before junior catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) singled through the left side to plate Sagaities for the first run of the game.
After a scoreless second inning, the Bullets tallied a single mark in the third off a Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) single up the middle. Woodbury scored Dean, who led off with a double to center. Erin Ober’s (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) bunt advanced Dean to third and allowed her to score easily on Woodbury’s hit.
Swarthmore cut the lead in half with their lone run of the game on two hits and a Bullet error in their half of the third. With two outs, back-to-back singles by sophomore second baseman Christine Sendelsky and junior shortstop Katherine Gold paired with senior first baseman Kelly Siano reaching base on a Gettysburg error to muster a run.
Gettysburg would score another two runs in the sixth, add one more in the seventh and keep the Garnet off the board in their final at bat to secure the 5-1 win.
Yannotta led off the sixth with an infield single. A ground out advanced her to second before she took advantage of a passed ball and moved to third. Free passes to freshman second baseman Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and senior right fielder Meg Gorsuch (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) loaded the bases for the Bullets. Sagaities was hit by a pitch to walk in the first run of the inning. Dean followed with a two-out walk to bring in the other.
Gettysburg put together the final run of the game in the seventh on a double to center by Yannotta and singles by Woodbury and Iacobucci.
After Rubino struck out the side to start game two, the Bullets went to work at the plate. They put together two runs in their half of the first and a single tally in the second. Dean led off the first with a single, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on Miller’s single to center. Miller advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Yannotta then traded places with Miller when she tallied her second double of the day.
The second saw another Gettysburg run on hits by Iacobucci and Sagaities, in addition to an Ursinus (29-9) error.
The Bears mustered a run in the top of the fourth. After a bunt single by junior left fielder Erin McHugh, a Tracy Olsen single to right and a fielder’s choice ground out, Ursinus threatened with runners on second and third. When sophomore designated player Kaitlyn Sutherland reached on a Bullet fielding error, McHugh scored the Bears’ only run of the game.
Gettysburg jumped out to a 5-1 lead off a single swing by Sagaities in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, she sent a two-run shot over the center field fence for her fourth home run of the season.
The Bullets will return to action on Sunday when they take on the winner of the 10 a.m. game between Swarthmore and Ursinus. The winner will face Gettysburg, who advances to the championship unbeaten on the day. The championship game is slated to begin 30 minutes after game one. If necessary, a third game will be played 15 minutes after game two to decide this year’s champion.
