GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's tennis team fell shy of its quest for its first 10-win season in four years as Muhlenberg College earned the decisive point in the second-to-last match to pick up a 5-4 Centennial Conference victory on Saturday, April 24.
Gettysburg (9-8, 3-6 CC) put itself in an early hole by dropping two of three doubles matches. Seniors
Dale Beshore (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and
Kevin Raynes (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) concluded their doubles careers with an 8-2 win at the third position. For Beshore, the win marked the 34th doubles decision of his career, moving him into fourth place on the school's all-time list.
After Muhlenberg (5-8, 3-6 CC) picked up an 8-3 win at the top spot, Matt Kral and Wayne Mitchell survived a tiebreaker against sophomore
Mike McLaughlin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and freshman
Chris Curran (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) for a 9-8 (7-4) decision.
The Bullets jumped back into the contest with a pair of quick wins in singles action to take a 3-2 lead on the scoreboard. Sophomore
Terry Keegan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) wasted little time in wrapping up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3, while Curran earned his fourth victory over a conference opponent's top player this spring with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Jordan Rutt at No. 1. Curran capped his debut season with a 12-7 overall mark.
The Mules countered with straight-set decisions at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2) and No. 4 (6-1, 6-3) to retake the advantage. Robbie Goldwein clinched the match for the visitors by beating Beshore, who hadn't practiced all week due to illness, 6-2, 6-4 at the second flight.
Sophomore
Sebastian Rodriguez (Plano, Texas/Plano West) ended the afternoon by winning his team-best 13th singles match of the season at No. 5. After bowing in the opener with Wayne Mitchell 6-3, Rodriguez rebounded for 6-3 and 6-1 wins, utilizing his patented drop-shot to pick up several points.
