KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. – The three student-athletes representing the Gettysburg College women's lacrosse program turned in quite the performance in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III North-South Senior All-Star Game held on June 12, combining for 11 goals and leading the South to a 16-8 victory.
Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) took home the MVP trophy after putting up four goals, one assist, six draw controls, and a pair of ground balls. 2010 IWLCA Midfielder of the Year
Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) notched four scores and
Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) posted a hat trick.
The North had to feel a bit overmatched facing a South roster with nearly half of its players hailing from three of the four national semifinalists. Undaunted, Cortland State's Nicole Mahoney put the North up 1-0 with the first goal of the game.
Emala made good on her second draw control by converting her first goal to tie the game. The North held strong, however, as Williams' Whitney Thayer answered right back to put the score at 2-1.
All-Star games often make for strange bedfellows and last Saturday's affair was no different as all three Bullets scored goals courtesy of Franklin & Marshall College's Blake Hargest during the afternoon. Emala and Hargest hooked up on the next goal and kicked off a 9-0 run by the South. Each of the South's first seven goals was scored by a Bullet with Crane getting into the action on the go-ahead goal. Hargest dished out another helper to Stahl to make it 9-2 and the South went into the break with a comfortable 10-3 advantage.
Crane and Emala opened the second half with back-to-back goals to open a 12-3 lead by the South. The North staged a comeback in the second half and pulled to 13-7, but the South cemented the lead with a three-goal run, capped by a Hargest feed to Crane.
Emala, Stahl, and Crane were each named IWLCA All-Americans in 2010. Stahl and Crane were first-team selections, while Emala was a third-team honoree. The All-Americans were honored at a banquet held at the Crown Valley Plaza in King of Prussia, Pa., later on in the evening of June 12. Stahl was tabbed IWLCA Midfielder of the Year, while teammate and 2010 graduate
Nicole Ditillo (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Division III.
