1985 Softball, Football Squads Set for Hall Recognition

The 1985 softball team won 22 games in a row.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –A pair of the greatest squads to ever don the orange and blue are slated for recognition at the 2010 Hall of Athletic Honor Induction Ceremony set for Friday, Oct. 1, as part of Gettysburg College's Homecoming Weekend.

The 1985 softball team belied its youth as a program and turned in one of the greatest seasons by any team in school history. In just its fifth year of competition as a varsity program, Gettysburg notched its first 20-win season and closed with an overall record of 22-2. The team's two losses came at the beginning and at the end of the schedule, sandwiching a school-record 22-game winning streak. The team won all 10 of its games in the Middle Atlantic Conference and had five players tabbed to the Southern Division All-Star Team, including current Hall of Athletic Honor members Karen Tessmer '85 and Sue Marshall '85.

Team
In the fall of the same year, the football team produced a near-perfect campaign en route to its third-straight Centennial Conference championship. The Bullets went unbeaten over the course of its 10-game regular season behind a stout defensive unit that notched five shutouts and set a conference record by allowing only five points per game. Gettysburg blazed into the NCAA Division III Tournament with wins over Lycoming and Salisbury before bowing to eventual national runner-up Ithaca in the semifinals. No Centennial team before or after has advanced that far in the postseason. A total of six Bullets were tabbed All-Centennial Conference First Team with defensive back Brian Barr '86 and halfback Paul Martin '86 also being named All-Americans. 2010 Hall of Athletic Honor inductee Tony Wechter '88 played a key role as a strong safety and return specialist on the team.

Both teams and their members will be recognized for their accomplishments following the induction of the five newest Hall of Athletic Honor members Friday evening. Joining Wechter in the Hall are Craig Van Tatenhove '65, Kristen Hull-Gray '95, Catherine Schott-Murray '00, and Paul Smith '00. A reception and dinner is planned to begin at 6:45 in the ballroom of the College Union Building.
