GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The No. 9 top moment in Gettysburg College athletics from 2011-12 comes from the softball diamond, where
Joy Hallfors '13 beat out an infield single to the pitcher
to cap an improbable final-inning comeback victory over Muhlenberg College on April 1.
In the heated race for the postseason, every victory was needed in the Centennial Conference. Muhlenberg looked like it had the opening game of a doubleheader at Gettysburg secured, leading 8-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
In a scene reminiscent of its comeback win over Hood College in 2010, the Bullets went to work at the plate and brought around three quick runs to slice the deficit to 8-5 with one out on the board.
After working the bases loaded, Gettysburg pulled within a run as
Abby Ferguson '14 blasted a double over the left fielder's head to score two runs. Luck continued to follow the Bullets on the next play as
Katie Lang '13 managed to knock the ball loose on the first baseman's tag following a grounder, allowing the game-tying run to cross home.
Two batters later, with two outs and runners on second and third, Hallfors strode to the plate for her second at bat of the inning. Her hit only went a few feet in front of the plate, but the speedy outfielder raced down the line and beat the throw to first as the game-winning run touched home.
The win would prove the difference in Gettysburg's playoff fate as the Bullets and Mules tied for the final spot in the conference tournament. Gettysburg won the tiebreaker, advancing to the playoffs and eliminating Muhlenberg from contention.
